Low back pain is one of the most frequent complaints with which patients are treated to physicians and neurologists. About 90% of people at least once in their lifetime experienced back pain. About 40% of patients seek medical help. The most common causes of back pain are diseases of the spine, primarily degenerative-dystrophic, such as osteochondrosis, spondylosis deformans, and strain muscles.Moreover, various diseases of the abdomen and pelvis, including the tumor, may cause the same symptoms as herniated disc, compressing the spinal root.
Not accidentally, such patients treat not only to neurologists, but also to gynecologists, orthopedists, urologists, and first of all to the district or family doctor.According to current ideas, most common causes of low back pain are considered to be pathological changes in the spine, primarily degenerative-dystrophic, pathological changes in the muscles, usually myofascial syndrome,lesions in the abdominal cavity, diseases of the nervous system.
Among the risk factors of low back pain are considered to be also heavy exercises, uncomfortable working positions, injuries and trauma, overcooling, air drafts, alcohol abuse,depression and stress, occupational diseases connected with influence of high temperatures, beam energy, with sharp fluctuations in temperature, vibration.
A great role in back pain can play a variety of functional disorders of the lumbar spine, when due to incorrect posture arise blocks of intervertebral joints and breaks down their mobility. In the joints above and below the unit develops a compensatory hypermobility, which leads to muscle spasm. Among the signs of low back pain and compression of the spinal canal can be named numbness in the perineal region, weakness and numbness of the feet, delay of bowel and bladder, a decrease of pain, changing with numbness of extremities and pelvic girdle.
Most often, low back pain symptoms occur at the age of 25-44 years. There are acute pain, lasting usually for 2-3 weeks, sometimes up to 2 months. And chronic – over 2 months. Symptoms actually depend on the location of the lesion.
In most cases,pain develops without any reason reason. Sometimes it is immediately preceded by catarrhal conditions, such as flu, sore throat. Often patients point on link with a physical attack, overexertion, with hard work, awkward movement of the body. Low back pain has a greater tendency to relapse.
